Timeless design, simple yet sophisticated ...
The Arts & Crafts Movement began in England in the late
1800's as a rebellion against society's embrace of industrialization
and mass production. William Morris and John Ruskin were early
proponents of going back to a more guild-based philosophy that
emphasized craftsmanship and honesty of design. The spare, clean
lines of the Arts & Crafts Movement were a welcome relief
from the excessive embellishment and artifice of the Victorian
era.
Arts & Crafts furniture is simple yet sophisticated in
design, characterized by elaborate construction details and the
natural beauty of wood. A high degree of craftsmanship is required
to execute the dovetail and the mortise, tenon and peg, joinery
which is integral to the style. This uniquely American style
has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity in the past 10 years,
as consumers have gravitated toward the comfort, warmth and fine
craftsmanship of these timeless designs.
